I'm glad to be back at the blog too! The bees are doing really well. We will be taking the honey off in the next week or so. Last I checked them my three hives were very strong and were producing very well.

I'm glad you're blogging again. I've been reading your posts since last year--our families have a lot of the same interests, namely self-sufficiency. How are the bees doing?

We have a surge but with longer hoses that we can see through so that we can set it on the ground while milking. We also have individual shut off valves attached to the base of each pulsator so when one quarter stops milking, we can keep the rest going without straining the empty one. We love our surge milker. At first I got tired of cleaning it but now I don't mind... just part of the 2x a day routine. Much better than hand milking (for us).

They look REALLY GOOD. I wish we lived closer . . .

If you want to try a red apple, I suggest Fireside, Wolf River, Cortland, or Macintosh (MacFree, etc). They tend to be more crisp. We have been sampling from our local farmers market!

Thank You for sharing the recipe. We'll have to try it.

Cool contraption! I am swearing off of milk though, due to your description of hair, mosquitoes and 'bits' falling in milk. I'm going to visualize this episode everytime I pour out milk. I will get my calcium from ice cream now (don't point out the obvious to me, okay?)

Love Ya!

Thank You for sharing your green tomato ideas. I'll have to try some of these next year. Usually, I put our green tomatoes in a large paper bag (from the store) and fold down the top. As long as a least some of the tomatoes are already ripening, the rest do too. I've heard that you can speed up the process by putting a ripe apple inside too. I check it every other day or so and usually use them up in lasagna or spaghetti sauce.

We like drying the applesauce (with no sugar added) in our dehydrator to make fruit roll-ups. Yummy!

I agree with you! Living closer to the land gives you a much deeper appreciation for life. We make decisions differently because of it. We try to have less waste, and there is more caring and feeling of responsibility to our animals because of the stewardship that we have. I sometimes wonder how it is that our society has come to the point where it is disgusted to think that the food we are eating, was not too long ago, the healthy animal that we spent time raising. A separation from the land probably is the cause.
